Moving off campus means nobody checks your building at night but you. The good news: the stuff that actually keeps you safe near UNCC is boring, free, and takes about a week to turn into habit. Here are the five that matter most in University City.
1. Lock it even when you’re home
Your front door is the whole security system now. Leaving? Lock it. Upstairs? Lock it. Asleep? Locked. Ground-floor windows and patio doors count double — an unlocked one is the most common way in, not a broken lock.
2. Keys in hand, every time
Mailbox run, trash run, grabbing a charger from your car — take your keys. After-hours lockout calls at some complexes run $150 or more, and yes, it’s in the lease.
3. Get LiveSafe before your first class

4. Have the roommate talk in week one
Five minutes: who locks up, do guests get keys, does the door stay locked when people are home. Your security is whoever in the apartment cares least — so get everyone to care once, out loud.
